Do You Need a License to Rent a Boat in Florida? The 2026 Rules
Florida has no boating license — but anyone born on or after Jan 1, 1988 needs a Boating Safety Education card to drive a rental. The 90-day online exam, what it costs, and the deadline that decides your rental.

Short answer: Florida doesn't issue a boating license, so nobody needs one. But there's a rule that catches renters every week, and it has a hard edge: get it wrong and the boat legally can't leave the dock with you at the wheel.
The Jan 1, 1988 rule
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who operates a boat of 10 horsepower or more in Florida must carry a Boating Safety Education ID card plus a photo ID. Born before 1988? You're exempt — skip to the booking. The card itself never expires, so if you've ever earned one, you're done for life.
The 90-day temporary certificate (the renter's shortcut)
- An online 25-question exam — answer 19 correctly and you pass.
- Offered by FWC-authorized vendors: the bare state exam runs $8; versions with a study course about $13.
- Your certificate is issued electronically the moment you pass — valid 90 days in Florida.
- Already hold another state's NASBLA-approved boater card? That works here too — no extra exam.
The deadline that actually matters
The card has to exist before rental day. Florida law requires us to check it before handing over the boat — no card means the rental can't go out, and that's not a policy we can bend. The fix is easy: take the exam the day you book. It's an evening on the couch, not a course. The exam links live on our booking page.
Baycation's own requirements
- 21 or older to rent the boat.
- Whoever takes the wheel carries the card (born on/after Jan 1, 1988) and a photo ID.
- Every rental starts with a dockside orientation — the boat, the gear, the no-wake zones, and the day's route marked before you push off.
Card in hand, the rest is picking a day. Check open dates — weekends go first.
