Fort De Soto by Boat: North Beach Without the Parking Lot
Fort De Soto's North Beach by boat: anchor off the Gulf side and wade in — the lagoon itself is closed to all watercraft. The closest marquee beach day to a St. Pete launch.

Fort De Soto is the biggest park in Pinellas County, and its North Beach keeps landing on best-beach-in-America lists. Everyone else fights for parking. You idle past the whole line — it's the closest marquee stop to our launch, an easy run even on a breezy day.
The rule that matters: stay out of the lagoon
The famous North Beach lagoon — the calm turquoise pool in every drone photo — is closed to all watercraft: boats, kayaks, paddleboards, everything. Pinellas County shut it for swimmer safety — thousands of people wade across that shallow lagoon to reach North Beach, and the county wanted boats out of the mix. The play instead: anchor off the Gulf side about 100–150 yards out, or beach on the open sand north and east of the lagoon, and wade in like everyone who arrived the smart way.
What the day looks like
- Morning: anchor the Gulf side, wade the bar, let the kids own the shallows.
- Midday: cooler lunch aboard under the Bimini — the Half Day includes the stocked cooler and ice.
- Afternoon options: the mangrove edges hold manatees in winter, the flats hold redfish year-round, and Shell Key is one pass away when you want a second stop.
Worth knowing
The park is still working through storm repairs from the 2024 hurricanes — sections of the land-side loop and some ramp amenities come and go, which matters to drivers and not at all to you. From the water, the beach is the beach. Watch your depth on the flats at low tide, and give the swim zones their posted room.
Shortest run, biggest-name beach, zero parking lot. Pick a date and beat the gate line by water.
Common questions
Can you take a boat into the Fort De Soto lagoon?+

Is Fort De Soto good for kids by boat?+
It's the family pick: calm, clear, waist-deep water off the beach, sandbar wading, and the boat's shade and cooler twenty yards away. Life jackets in every size are aboard.
