What to Bring on a Tampa Bay Boat Day (and What's Already Aboard)

The packing list for a self-drive boat day on Tampa Bay: what to bring, what's already on the boat, how fuel works on a rental, and what happens if the weather turns.

The open cockpit and bow seating of the Monterey 215 SS ready for guests
The boat's half of the list is already handled. Yours fits in one bag.

Eight people, one boat, a whole day on the water — here's the list that works, refined by watching hundreds of groups load at the dock.

Bring this

  • Reef-safe sunscreen — apply before you board, re-apply at the sandbar. The water doubles the sun.
  • A towel per person and a dry change for the ride home.
  • Water shoes — sandbars are shell country (Shell Key earns the name).
  • A dry bag for phones, keys, and the one wallet the group actually needs.
  • Food and drinks — the boat carries a stocked cooler with ice on half-day and longer rentals; bring what fills it. Passengers 21+ can drink aboard — the rules worth knowing.
  • Polarized sunglasses with a strap — the strap is the part people skip and regret.
  • Your Boating Safety Education card if the driver was born on or after Jan 1, 1988 — the license rules, settled before rental day.

Already aboard — don't double-pack

  • Life jackets in every size, and all required safety gear.
  • Bimini shade over the cockpit, Bluetooth sound system.
  • The cooler and ice (half-day and longer).
  • A fueled boat — see below.

“Do we pay for fuel?”

Not here. Fuel is included in every Baycation package — the boat leaves full and there's no per-gallon settle-up when you're back. (Plenty of rentals elsewhere bill fuel after; it's the first fine-print question worth asking anyone you rent from.)

“What if the weather turns?”

Safety calls are ours and we make them early: if we cancel for weather, you reschedule or get a full refund — no questions. A passing summer shower usually just reroutes the afternoon; a real blow cancels it. You'll never be pressured onto ugly water.

Bag packed in ten minutes, the rest is showing up. Pick your date.

Common questions

Do you pay for fuel on a boat rental?+

At Baycation, no — fuel is included in every package and the boat leaves the dock full. Elsewhere, many rentals charge fuel after the trip, so always ask before booking.

What happens if it rains on your rental day?+

If we cancel for weather you reschedule or get a full refund, no questions. Brief summer showers often pass through a day without ending it — we make the safety call early either way.

What should you wear on a boat day?+

Swimsuit under light clothes, water shoes for shelly sandbars, a hat that ties or clips, and polarized sunglasses with a strap. Bring a warm layer for the ride home after sunset runs.
